Description:

Inverted Jenny - Position 22

#C3a, 1918, 24c Carmine Rose & Blue F 70 PSE. (Original Gum - Previously Hinged). The Holy Grail of United States stamps; "The Inverted Jenny" ... A single full pane of 100 was originally discovered and purchased by William T. Robey at the New York Avenue post office in Washington D.C. on May 14, 1918. Each stamp was subsequently numbered lightly in pencil on the reverse in the lower right corner shortly after discovery. ...This copy, now encapsulated and graded Fine 70 by the PSE, is Position 22 from that pane.

The overall design framework appearing shifted slightly downward, the vignette meticulously centered within that framework, albeit upside-down. The gum side showing light traces of previous hinging dead-center of the stamp, overall inconsequential to the prominence of this highly celebrated rarity. Fine. PSE - Encapsulated.
ex-Colonel Edward H. R. Green and ex-Eugene Klein.
(SMQ $380,000; this being one of 2 attaining this grade as of 10/08, with only 3 graded higher)...
