Heritage/Bennett Auction comes to NYC event, June 2-4
DALLAS, TX - In addition to its Signature Auction, Heritage/Bennett Rare Stamps will be bringing the first of its "Exhibition Collection" offerings to a special Heritage/Bennett New York City Auction event, June 2-3 (with a non-floor session online on June 4) at the Four Seasons Hotel in Midtown, 57 E. 57th Street. These are the first public auctions since Heritage and Matthew Bennett International joined forces last March to create a rare stamps authority, and the hobby of Philately has been waiting to see what bounty the partnership would yield.
"We're very proud to offer this extraordinary gathering of stamps," said Harvey Bennett, Director of Philately at Heritage. "We'll be bringing almost 2,000 lots to New York City. It's such a wide and diverse offering with truly something for everyone."
The auction will feature the World Class Collection of Richard Pounder with U.S. Possessions, outstanding Special Deliveries, Philippines Victory overprints, and a wide array of postal history. Two other collections of interest are the Harvey Tilles Gold Medal Award Winning Exhibit Collection "Prevention of Postal Fraud and Deceit" and the Lawrence Cohen Collection of 1923 Harding Memorial Issue. We are also pleased to offer the Dr. Stewart Mann Collection of United States Stamps, a high quality offering of mostly graded stamps. Collectors will also find a good selection of 1847 and Civil War postal history plus outstanding back of the book offerings.
Highlights include:
A used Pair of 24c Green & Violet, Center Inverted (120b) stamps provide the auction one of fits most striking - and certainly its rarest - lots. This horizontal pair, with each stamp canceled by neat rosette fancy cancels, is especially well centered for the issue with rich vibrant colors and proof-like impressions on crisp white paper. The pair is very lightly stamped "Pemberton, Wilson & Co." on the back and in Very Fine condition. Scott Catalog Value: $57,500.
"This is the finer of two recorded pairs and one of only three known multiples of any of the 1869 inverts," said Bennett. "It's also certainly amongst the best centered of all recorded examples. Given that the vast majority of the 24c Inverts are faulty or heavily cancelled, the existence of this pair, in such great condition, is simply miraculous."
A spectacular Philippine usage of the $1 Trans-Mississippi stamp, from the Pounder Collection, provides an intriguing and subtle note to the auction. The lot is officially listed as an 1899, May 29, "Mil. Sta. No. 1, Philippine Isls, San Francisco, Cal." Registry c.d.s. with 1c (2), 4c, (8c (2) & $1 Trans-Mississippis, plus 6c Lake, cancelled Spanish "R"s, on large, linen-lined cover front to Bremen, Germany. It is one of only two recorded usages of the $1 Trans-Mississippi from the Philippines. It carries an estimate of $5,000-$7,000.
Further highlights of the auction include:
1871-72 Second & Third Issue Plate Proofs on Card (R105//131P4 & R134-50P4):

Each sheet has two imprints in opposite margins, are mostly fresh and Very Fine.: occasional edge toning plus a few light stains affecting the top row of the $50 2nd issue and a few right 60c 3rd issue stamps in the right vertical row (including both foreign entries), otherwise mostly fresh and Very Fine. Scott Catalog Value: $115,460+ for singles and blocks without premium for plate blocks.
Highest Graded Double Surcharge:
A 1919 $2 on $1 Violet Brown, Double Surcharge (K16a), beautifully centered and exceptionally fresh with lightly hinged original gum, Extremely Fine and choice. One of the finest of only 200 issues, this stamp is the only K16a awarded and XF by PSE, and none have been graded higher. Scott Catalog Value: $8,500.
Postage Dues, 1879, 1c - 50c Large Die Trial Color Proofs (J1-7TC1):
A complete set, lacking only the 3c Gray Black, comprising 59 of 60 listed colors. All but the 5c ultramarine are still on card, each neatly reduced to just larger than the size of the die, i.e. approximately 55mm x 65mm for the 1c to 5c and 65mm x 75mm for the 10c-50c except the 1c ultramarine and the 30c olive yellow, which are 45mm x 54mm.
