Back to the topHeritage/Bennett Auctions Offers The Famed Col. Green "Inverted Jenny" And Locket
In 1918, shortly after the death of his mother, Hetty Green- the notorious "witch of Wall Street", Col. "Ned" Green, an avid stamp collector, purchased the unique sheet of the famed "Inverted Jenny", or #C3a. He bought the complete sheet from Eugene Klein who had, in turn, purchased it from the discoverer of the printing error, William T. Robey.
Correctly understanding the enormous value to stamp collectors, Col. Green proceeded to break up the sheet into blocks and singles to sell and held on to a few large multiples plus the straight edge copies for himself. One of those examples he had encased in a gold locket as a gift to his wife Mabel. The Colonel had given his wife many elaborate gifts, such as the $625,000 he gave her upon their marriage. However, the locket must have had some sentimental value. Although her husband's stamps were sold upon his death in 1936, Mabel saved the locket until her own demise in 1950.
Heritage/Bennett will auction this uniquely housed example in its public Signature Auction to be conducted at the New York Four Seasons Hotel in December, 2009. In addition to the Inverted Jenny in the locket, we will be offering one other #C3a as well as a set of Pan-American Inverts.

Heritage Auctions/Bennett Announces Reduced Buyer's Premium
Dear friends and colleagues:
After spending much of the summer talking to old friends and new, my colleagues at Heritage Auctions/Bennett and I have heard quite a few expressions of discomfort with our previous 19.5% buyer's premium. We want you to know how much we value your feedback and, as a result of all the productive discussion we've had, are acting on your suggestions. So beginning now, with our first Internet auction of this Fall 2009 season, our buyer's premium for all auctions — Internet and public — is just 15%.
I am pleased and heartened so many of you took the time to speak frankly with us and that your thoughts were well-considered and thoughtful. I am also thankful for the great number of you who had positive feedback about the first six months of our new association.
All of us in the stamp division look forward to continuing the establishment of Heritage Auctions/Bennett in the tradition of great stamp auction houses.
Thank you all,
Harvey BennettDirector of Philately
